We're heading down to Malibu and Ventura county for this year's California Ale, hosted by
Rising Phoenix Morris. This annual great gathering of morris teams
all up and down the west coast, and some guests from England as well, is one of the great gatherings of the year.
See http://TheCaliforniaAle.info for details on the ale schedule of
performance
throughout the area.
Friday, May 1, 5:30a - Palo Alto Baylands, May Day morning,
Join us at the
Baylands
Nature Preserve and come help us dance up the Sun in Palo Alto on
MayDay morning (we do it
every year, and it always works - good thing, too!) and celebrate. It's not so much that we believe the sun
won't come up on Mayday without some dancing, it's just that if we didn't dance, and the sun didn't come up, we'd
feel really bad.
If you haven't been out to see the sunrise celebration, give it a try. It's very beautiful,
and while the sleepiness lasts only as long as it takes you to get there, the happy glow lasts all day!
Not in Palo Alto? - that's ok - there's May Day dancing all over
North America
Saturday, May 1, 11:00a - San Francisco Waldorf School, San Francisco
We bring the May Day cheer to the San Francisco Waldorf School
as part of their May Fair celebration. We're meeting somewhere in Golden Gate Park. Contact the
for details.
Saturday, May 1, 1:00p to 2:00p - Revels May Day, Oakland Zoo
Celebrate May Day,
Revels
style at the Oakland Zoo,
9777 Golf Links Rd., Oakland off Highway 580. Of course, we'll be dancing but there's lots more to see and do
as well. More info on the Revels website.
Sunday, May 2, 2:00p to 5:00p - Revels May Day, Pelican Inn, Muir Beach
Join us at a favorite Deer Creek haunt, the Pelican Inn
(a bit of ole Blighty in the Bay Area) for good food, good drink, good dance, and good Revels fun. Good gracious!
The inn is located at
10 Pacific Way in Muir Beach. We'll be joined by Apple Tree Morris and
other morris dancers in search of a good time.
Sunday, May 9, 12:30p and 2:15p - Ardenwood Historic Farm, Fremont
The
Ardenwood
Historic Farm is at
34600 Ardenwood Bl in Fremont. We'll be
joining hosts
Goat Hill Morris
for two 45-minute shows for this special Mother's Day fete. Bring out your mom - show her you love her.
Give the gift of morris dancing. And afterwards you'll likely finding us
toasting Mom at the Englander pub
Sunday, May 23, 12:30p - Whitsunday Grace Cathedral, San Francisco
As part of Whitsunday, we'll be dancing in the
Grace Cathedral courtyard after the late morning service. Since it's in
San Francisco, check out their website for directions,
parking, and transit information.
Saturday, June 5, 2:30p to 5p - Chocolate and Chalk Festival, Berkeley
Deer Creek returns for a repeat performance at this year's
Chocolate and Chalk Festival,
in North Berkeley's Gourmet Ghetto along
Shattuck Avenue and Vine Street.
Sunday, June 13, 11:30a to 7:00p - Apple Tree Morris
Sonoma Tour
We join Apple Tree Morris and
Berkeley Morris for a tour of some of our favorite Sonoma County spots.
We'll start with a late-morning or noon performance at the
Sebastopol
Farmers Market (Downtown Plaza at McKinley Street) and trust to Apple Tree to see us through the day.
Saturday, June 19, 12:00p to 4:00p - Black-and-White Tour,
San Francisco
Members of the team have been known to attend this wonderful gathering.
It's out of our colors and into our black n' whites for the tour of the same name. We join morris dancers
from teams all around the Bay Area as we do an entire day to gather and dance out in a "mix and match" fashion
from these other teams. In lieu of kit (costume), we dress in black and white only, but still get pretty creative
with ribbons, hats, vests, (not to mention them with skirts, striped tights and corsets). The colors have been
removed to protect the innocent and provide plausible deniability for everyone else.
The tour starts at the Conservatory of Flowers in
Golden Gate Park and there will be a pub stop
afterwards at Yancy's, near
9th and Irving.
Sunday, June 20, 6:00p to 9:00p - Revels
Summer Solstice, Oakland
The Revels present "
Solstice in the Shire: a
country English Celebration of Summer" at the
Oakland Zoo - Join us at the
Snow Building. We'll be dancing, but there will be lots more
Revels fun, too! Feast on a fantastic picnic supper, enjoy the
entertainment and bid in the silent auction for cool stuff. Check the
Revels website
for pricing.
Friday, July 2, somewhen - Marin County Fair, San Rafael
Expect to see us with members of
Apple Tree Morris as
afternoon strolling performers at the
Marin County Faire. The fair
is at
10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael, and runs from 11a to 10p. General
admission is $15 and lots of details about the event is our their
website. Details about our humble
contribution should be forthcoming soon.
Saturday, July 17, 5:00p to 10:00p - Hideous Will's Cotillion, Oakland
Members of the team have been known to show up at the most unsavory places.
Take, for example, Hideous Will’s Cotillion,
held at Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street, Oakland.
Hideous Will’s is an occasion for *social* morris dancing, with an aim towards creating a Saturday-night-at-the-ale
pick-up dance. No kit, no busses, no skits, just music and dance. Go crazy! Bring bells,
instruments, hankies, (they will have some sticks, but you can bring those too), humor, and energy. People
often bring food and drink to share, too. Do as thou wilt. To help cover the hall cost, you are invited
to make donations.
There is parking available next to the hall, and that public transportation stops reasonably close by. For more info,
contact for details.
Saturday, August 7, 11:45a to 1p- Martinez Beaver Festival, Martinez
Come see us at the
Martinez Beaver Festival. We'll start joining in the children's
processional (we're all children at heart), followed by a performance with the
Revels Solstice
Ensemble in the Center Square. There will be music,
environmental displays, tours, and children's activities. Come learn about these
famous stewards of Alhambra Creek. The festival runs 11:00a to 4:00p at
Beaver Park,
495 Alhambra (at Marina Vista Ave), Martinez and is definitely worth a dam.
Monday, September 6, 11a to 5p- Revels
Bromliad, Oakland
Deer Creek participates in the first ever
Revels Bromliad. Dance
teams and interested individuals are welcome to come together for a day of
picnicking, dancing, and music. The Bromliad is a mass dancing of the
Abbots Bromley
Horn Dance featuring more people than have ever before danced it at one time
- all on the same day as they’re dancing it in
England.
This free event will take place in a beautiful glade in
Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland (make a left into the park at the upper
Sanborn intersection; we'll be in the 1st glade down the trail from the entrance
and there should be a sign). Picnickers can arrive any time after 11:00a.
At 1:00p, we set up for the largest horn dance serpentine ever. The
fun continues throughout the day with morris and country dancing Show up
and be a part of dance history!
Saturday, September 11, 5:00p to 10:00p - Hideous Will's Cotillion, Oakland

Saturday, September 18, 8p - Shay
Black at the Freight, Berkeley
Our good friend
Shay Black is
celebrating his birthday at the
Freight & Salvage and Deer Creek may just drop in for a bit of dancing.
The music and singing looks to be a spectacular line-up, including Oak, Ash, &
Thorn, the Revels Solstice Ensemble and many others. The Freight is at
2020 Addison Street. Tickets are $24.50 advance, $25.50 at the door.
Friday-Sunday, December 10-12, 17-19, 2010 - The Christmas Revels, Oakland
Deer Creek Morris (and some of our alumni) help bring in
the holiday season with the California Revels presentation
of their show "25th Annual Christmas Revels: A Celebration of the Winter
Solstice" at the Oakland Scottish Rite
Theater, located at
1547 Lakeside Drive, across from Lake Merrit. Parking can be
challenging, so check out the
parking and transit info.
Friday shows start at 7:30p, weekend shows are at 1:00p and 5:00p. Don't
miss this presentation of Irish, English, Scottish, and Welsh folk traditions in
song and dance.
Tuesday, December 21, 2010 3:00p to 8:00p -
National Park Service
Winter Solstice, Muir Woods
Join us for the National Park Service's
annual celebration of the longest night of the year with the tallest trees on
earth, the coastal redwoods. The park rangers will be put on a family
friendly outdoor program for all ages starting at the
Muir Woods
National Monument (1
Muir Woods Trail) Visitor Center, RAIN OR SHINE. Activities and
events include the
making of solstice crowns, a stage performance of songs, stories, and puppetry,
light of bonfires, and walking the trails of Muir Woods lit by luminaria. No reservations required.
The program is free - park entrance fees apply, but there's a free Migration
Mobile shutle for those who park down the road. This evening can be dark
and chilly; we ask visitors to bring a flashlight, dress warmly
(layers/blankets), and bring a mug for warm drinks. Deer Creek will
present the mysterious Abbots Bromley Horn Dance around 6:30p, starting in the
parking lot near the bonfire, then off into the forest, lit by lumenaria.
The dance will be followed by caroling led by members of the Revels chorus.
We'll all retire to the
Pelican Inn,
10 Pacific Way, Muir Beach for refreshments and carousing (and maybe a
little pick-up morris).
The event is open to any wanting to participate - show up
by 6:00p to learn and dance in Horn Dance (ask "Where's Marc?"), or just come to the Pelican Inn
afterwards.
We repair to the Pelican afterwards for libations, song
and holiday carousing.
There will be pick-up Morris on the Pelican lawn under the full moon, so bring
kit and/or instruments! Morris and Muzos all welcome!
For the full schedule and list of activities at Muir Woods, please
check their website or call the hotline at 415-388-2595 as the date approaches.
